Lovers’ Leap Story
There was a young slave girl and her lover, a slave himself, who both committed suicide by leaping over the precipitous cliff rather than be separated by the bonds of slavery. The owner planned to sell the young man so he could have the girl as his mistress. The lovers fled the plantation and, pursued by a band of white men, the fugitives “took a leap...into the deep” and thus ended the chase.
